What licence do I need to get onto a scooter?
If you want to get started on two wheels then here's how to go about it. This is a brief guide, please ask your local dealer or visit www.dvla.gov.uk for further details.

16 year-old
Apply for provisional licence forms D1 (type of licence) and D750 (photocard driving licence) are available from your local Post Office.
Complete CBT course which is valid for 2 years.
Ride 50cc with L-plates and no passengers.
17 year-old +
Apply for provisional licence forms D1 (type of licence) and D750 (photocard driving licence) are available from your local Post Office.
Complete CBT course, which is valid for 2 years.
Ride up to 125cc with L-plates (D-plates in Wales), no passengers.
Car licence holder (Licence issued before 1st Feb 2001)
Ride 50cc without L-plates, carry passengers.
To ride up to a 125cc, you must first complete a CBT course (valid for 2 years), you must display L plates (D-plates in Wales) and not carry passengers.
Scooters over 125cc - Once you have obtained your CBT certificate, if you wish to gain a full motorcycle licence (any category) you must first take the Motorcycle Theory Test, complete between one and four days training, then take the Practical Test. The cost of this depends on your ability and therefore how many days training you need, please contact your local test centre or dealer for more information.
Car licence holder (Licence issued on or after 1st Feb 2001)
Complete CBT course, which is valid for 2 years.
Ride up to 125cc with L-plates (D-plates in Wales), no passengers.

What does CBT stand for?
CBT is Compulsory Basic Training, it consists of a one-day course, costing approximately £100 and it can be arranged through your local dealer. Most of the course is conducted off the road to help you get used to the machine and learn basic riding skills. You CBT should be an enjoyable day providing you with training on basic road safety, the functions of your scooter, manoeuvring/parking, slow control and compulsory skills to give you confidence for safe scootering.

Can I ride, on my own, once I complete my CBT?
After you successfully complete your CBT course and obtain the DL 196 certificate, you are entitled to ride unaccompanied displaying the L-plates (D-plates in Wales).
