What is the Ethnic Minority Language and Achievement (EMLA) Service?

The EMLA Central Support Service to schools comprises of specialist teachers, bilingual support workers, a nursery nurse and secretarial support.

The EMLA Service works at nursery, infant, junior, primary and secondary levels in the City and County of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council LEAs.



How is the Service accessed?

* A pupil learning English as an additional language, or from an ethnic minority group identified as being at risk of underachieving, is referred to the EMLA Service by the school.
* The EMLA Service assess the pupil’s needs.
* Support is allocated as appropriate.



The EMLA Service supports:

* class and subject teachers working with ethnic minority pupils
* pupils in their learning of English as an additional language across the curriculum
* pupils through their home language(s), in Sylheti/Bengali, Chinese, Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu and Japanese and others
* schools in removing cultural and other barriers to learning
* schools developing links with ethnic minority parents.



The Service also offers:

* training to schools, teachers and governors



Aim of the EMLA Service

To help schools carry out their responsibility to pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds in their entitlement to equal access to the National Curriculum and in the achievement of their academic potential.
