"Future of Abergele’s Gwrych Castle remains uncertain

It could be from a fairytale but recently the story of Gwrych Castle nestling in the hillside above Abergele is more the stuff of nightmares.

Gwrych Castle was built in 1819 and became, says local historian Mark Baker, one of the first Gothic mansions to be constructed in Europe from scratch.

It was extended in the 1840s and for many years was used as an aristocratic home. But after the war, it changed hands a number of times, during which it was open to the public as an historic building and also used as a restaurant.

In 1989, an American bought it and sat on it for 16 years.

“In that time it went from being a building which you could live in to being a complete ruin and then the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust was set up and we campaigned for a change of ownership,” says Mark Baker.

“We helped market it and find a new owner, Clayton Hotels. They had plans for it to be changed into a country hotel. They spent about half a million pounds on it, clearing it and rebuilding areas but then they went into administration last year. At the moment it’s in the hands of the administrators.”

Is he fed up with the continued uncertainty? “No, this is how life is, especially in the current climate. The building is the safest it has been for a long time. We will just have to see what happens next.”

“I think it should have an appropriate use which takes into account its historic nature and architectural importance and also something that would provide employment for the area.

“It’s a solid structure, it was built like the mediaeval castles – it has quite a few years left.”

Mark Baker is upbeat also on how Abergele still retains much of its architectural history, particularly in Market Street, although ironically not the market itself of course. “The old market had been there for hundreds of years. It is a great tragedy it got redeveloped but people wanted the Tesco – it is trying to balance that need for change and the desire to keep historic buildings.”
