The full licence provides space to denote entitlement to drive large lorries, large buses and trailers (categories C, D and E). Licences issued since 1 April 1991 show such entitlement where appropriate. Drivers must hold full car entitlement before they can apply for provisional entitlement to drive lorries and/or buses.

Since 1 April 1991 the terms "Large Goods vehicle (LGV)" and "Passenger Carrying vehicle (PCV)" have replaced "Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV)" and "Public Service Vehicle (PSV)" respectively.

Drivers who hold separate HGV and/or PSV licences will have them replaced by the unified licence when the old licence is renewed

USEFUL INFORMATION ON NATIONAL PROVISIONS
TopWHEN YOU OBTAIN THE LICENCEOn receiving your licence you should check it, sign it provided all details are correct, and keep it in a safe place.

If you think something is wrong with the licence, please send it back to the DVLA in Swansea stating the error. This is especially important if there is a mistake in your name, address or date of birth. Your licence is valid either from the date you asked for it to begin or from the date on which it was issued by the DVLA, if this were later.

TopTHE LAYOUT OF THE LICENCEThe full licence provides space to denote entitlement to drive large lorries, large buses and trailers (categories C, D and E).

Drivers who hold separate HGV and/or PSV licences will have them replaced by the unified licence when the old licence is renewed.

TopDURATION OF LICENCESCar driving entitlement (category B) is normally valid until a driver's 70th birthday upon which it can be renewed every 3 years. LGV and PCV entitlements (categories C and D) last until the driver's 45th birthday and are renewable every 5 years until the driver reaches the age of 65, when it lasts for a year only. However, licences may be restricted if drivers are found to suffer from certain medical conditions.

TopWHEN YOU HAVE PASSED YOUR DRIVING TESTOnce you have passed your driving test in a car, lorry or bus you should exchange your test pass certificate for a full licence as soon as possible and within 2 years at the latest otherwise you will need to take another test. You can apply for your first full licence by signing the back of your provisional licence and sending it with your test pass certificate to DVLC. Foreign licence holders will need to complete a D1 application form after passing a test.

TopIF YOU ALREADY HOLD A LICENCE You may drive in the UK on the strength of a full licence issued by another Member State as long as that licence remains valid. Once its validity expires, you must obtain a replacement licence if you wish to continue driving in the UK. You should note, however, that the validity of your licence cannot extend beyond the period covered by the equivalent UK licence. Unless for medical reasons they are valid for a shorter period, car (and motorcycle) licences in the UK are generally valid until the holder is 70 years of age and may be renewed for periods of up to 3 years after that; licences for larger vehicles expire at the age of 45 and are renewable for periods of up to 5 years thereafter, until the age of 65, when the renewal period becomes annual.

Whatever kind of licence you hold, provided that it was one originally issued by another Member State (rather than one granted in exchange for one held from a non-Member State), you are free to exchange it for a UK equivalent. Whether you are exchanging another Member State's licence or obtaining your first licence, you will be subject to the rules on residence
