HPV stands for human papillomavirus. There are over 100 types of HPV but only 13 of them are known to cause cancer. The others are harmless or cause genital warts.

What the HPV vaccine protects against
The HPV vaccine protects against the two strains of HPV (16 and 18) that cause cervical cancer in over 70% of women. It does not protect against any other sexually transmitted infections or against pregnancy.

Because the HPV vaccine does not protect against ALL cervical cancers, it is really important for all girls to have cervical screening later in life.

HPV vaccination programme

Who’s the vaccine for?
The HPV vaccination programme started in September 2008 with all 12- to 13-year-old and 17- to 18-year-old girls being offered the vaccine. A catch-up programme was also announced at this time with 13- to 18-year-old girls being offered the vaccine over the following two academic years.

How many injections do I need?
You will need three doses of the vaccine over about a six-month period for the best protection against HPV. It is important to complete the course and have all three doses. Three vaccinations are needed over about a 6 month period – the second will be given 1-2 months after your first injection, and the third is given about 6 months after your first injection.

Why is HPV vaccination being offered to girls aged as young as 12 years? Could it not be given when girls are older?
HPV vaccination is best given before the start of sexual activity. While most girls don’t start having sex until they’re at least 16 or quite a bit older, it has been shown that the vaccine provides the best protection if it is given at 12 to 13 years of age.

How do I get it?
It will depend how old you are and where you live. Younger girls are most likely to be given the vaccine at school, and older girls might be offered the vaccine through their GP.

Do I have to have it?
Vaccination is not compulsory – consent will be needed before the vaccination. For 12- to 13-year-olds it is most likely that a consent form signed by your parent or guardian will need to be supplied before the vaccine is given. Girls aged 16 and over are legally able to consent for themselves.

How will I know when I am going to have the vaccination?
Your local NHS will provide information to you, which may be through your school or college. Younger girls may also be given a consent form. It is important that parents sign this and return it to the school before the vaccination is due. Older girls not in education are most likely to be contacted by their GP to arrange an appointment.

Will my GP know that I’ve had the HPV vaccination?
Information about the HPV vaccination will be passed to your GP’s surgery so it can be entered on your health record.

What if I miss my vaccination?
It’s important to rearrange your vaccination for another time soon after the date of your missed one. Three vaccinations are needed over about a 6 month period – the second is 1-2 months after your first injection, and the third is about 6 months after your first injection.

What if I don’t want to have the vaccination?
You don’t have to have it, if you don’t want to. But it is recommended that you do have it for the best protection against cervical cancer. Having the vaccination will protect you for many years. If you want more information, speak to the nurse or doctor, on your own, or, if you’d prefer, with your parents or a friend.

I don’t go to school. Can I still get HPV vaccination?
Yes, the vaccine is for all girls. If you are the right age (i.e. fall into the groups of girls being offered the vaccine), you can have the HPV vaccination whether you are at school or not. Primary care trusts are responsible for making arrangements for all eligible girls to be immunised. You should be contacted by your GP or local NHS who will tell you when the vaccination is due.
